Home Sweet Haiti

I'm back! To say that my trip to Haiti was amazing doesn't even begin to cover it. My team and I flew into Port-Au-Prince early Monday (July 15) morning and spent the night at Pastor Dio's house/orphanage and left for Tricotte (in the mountains, about a 5 hour drive from Port-au-Prince) the next day.

This is where 5 of the eight of us slept. See the teeny tiny bed? Yup, that's mine!

Tricotte is where we stayed, thankfully there was electricity, and running water there. Remoussin, a village 1.5 miles away, is where we built the church and held VBS.

It was the hardest two weeks of my life, and I'm not being dramatic at all. The days were long and hot and labor intensive. We literally moved rocks 8 hours a day, day after day. Plus, taught VBS to the kids in the village.

All the hard work, the sweat, the sore muscles, the homesickness was completely worth it though. To be able to give the people of Remoussin a building in which to worship was priceless. And to be able to work along side the Haitians, speaking in a mixture of Kriol and English, hearing some of them speak English for the first time, watching them color pictures or learn how to use scissors or a hammer is something that I will never forget.

It's so easy to forget how fortunate we are to live in the US. Living in Haiti is like stepping back in time. They don't have the latest and greatest cell phones, or cars, or gadgets. The majority of the island doesn't even have electricity, and the average family income is around $300.

This sweet little guy is Gurlin. I had the privilege of teaching him a few words in English. It was so encouraging to see and work along side him everyday.

I'm very blessed to have been able to go on this adventure and I am forever thankful for all the prayers and support from friends and family. This has been an experience that I will never forget and I can't wait to get back to Haiti. God is working wonders in that country and I'm happy that I could be a small part of it.

How great is our God!

Five on Friday

Happy Friday y'all!
This week has flown by, I can't believe that it's Friday already. I'm linking up with Natasha at Hello! Happiness for another Five on Friday.

Sales everywhere you go! Seriously though. I went to Lenox Square on Tuesday to make a return and of course keep shopping. I mean I just made a return so I had some money in the bank that needed to be used. Thankfully there were sales everywhere and I didn't pay full price for anything. Actually the skirt I got from LOFT was free because I had a gift card from a sweet student. And I used my teacher discount on top of the 30% off at J.Crew.

(do people still say that?)

Y'all know my obsession with May Designs right? Well I had a thought, a pretty good one too. Why get just any 'ol notebook to journal the next two week when I can get a super cute, personalized one?! Well, I went with the super cute part and ordered this notebook.
I love that the proceeds went to Rise School of Houston. You can purchase you're own here.

Last night some girl friends and I went to see The Heat and oh my word it is so funny. The language is kind of bad, but if you can look past that it's hilarious!

I made my first batch of gluten free peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and let me tell you, I don't miss that gluten at all! These cookies are SO delicious. I will be making these babies again.
Your girl ain't the best a food photography, but trust me it tastes better than the photo.
You can find the recipe here.

Tonight this pretty little lady and her love will say their "I do's"! I can't wait to celebrate with her!!
Congrats Jessica!!

My Classroom (Before)

This week I made my way ALL the way to school because I heard a rumor that the building was open. It was a true rumor and my mom, grandma and I waltzed in there like we owned the place asked my AP real real nicely if we could go see my classroom. Obviously she said yes or else you would be reading about the dilemmas of choosing the perfect nail polish color.

*disclaimer* I did not take these pictures, my wonderful grandmother did. And I'm not 100% sure why we didn't turn the lights on to take pics. We were just too excited I guess.

Nothing like an awkward "standing in front of the bulletin board" picture. Every teacher should have one.

Ahhh it's SO pretty! And completely unfinished. I'm trying not to freak out about all the work I need to do. I have a slight idea what I'm going to put where, like the classroom library, writing center, small group table etc.

I can't believe how fast this summer has gone by, but I'm just so excited to meet my sweet tiny humans in just a few short weeks!

hello there

Hello loves! I trust everyone had a wonderful 4th weekend! Personally I think we should live everyday like it's America's birthday. But maybe that's just me.
I completed my fourth Peachtree Road Race in record time (well a record for me!) an hour and 12 mins!

And because this weather we've been having is so unfortunately sucky we didn't see firework until Saturday... While driving down 285. Whhhaatt?!!? How uncool I know.

So what have I been up to this week? Please. Allow me to show you in pictures.

Leveling books for my classroom library. And picking out material for my curtains.
A post of my classroom coming soon :)

Attending some professional learning sessions.
Ok no pictures of that. It's really for the best.

Finishing up the planning and packing for my trip back to Haiti. I can't believe it's almost time to leave!!

Hanging out with this little dude,

and this pretty little lady.
gma is visiting for the month.

This baby came in the mail today.
How perfect! I'm in love.

And you know, just shopping for golden retriever puppies on Pinterest.
My dream dog!

Oh and my blog button is in the works. I've been putting off making it but I'm finally getting around to it.

Happy Wed-Nes-Day!
